Critical Thinking and You

Currently, I am taking a class called Critical Thinking. It's a decent class... could be better, could be worse. Definitely not one of those classes where you sit there and wonder, "How am I ever going to use this in real life?" (Shoot me if I ever take a class like that, in college of all places.)

Part of critical thinking is using formal logic to help you along. You know, Venn diagrams and "if P then Q"-type stuff. Here's one I made up the other day:

All poor people are stupid.
All minorities are poor.
-----------------------------
Therefore, all minorities are stupid.

(A special thanks to my lovely co-worker for helping me come up with this one! Sure, her 30-year-old son still lives at home and just started vocational school but that doesn't mean she doesn't know what she's talking about. He's white and middle class, so he can't possibly be stupid. That clearly follows; see above argument.)

I love my elitist co-workers. What I especially love is that they've welcomed me into their bosom as one of their own. Of course, I'm very pale with naturally red hair and don't have any sort of accent; why wouldn't they love me? I mean, if I had darker skin or maybe something Spic-like in my speech, then they'd have good reason for keeping their opinions to themselves. But I'm just as apple-pie as could be so why would they ever doubt?
